Our Prairie Property
Our Second Restoration Project
A Prairie Forever
Our second restoration project originated when we became aware of the importance of prairies to a healthy environment and wanted to contribute in some way. We bought our prairie property, which was once farmland and remains surrounded by agriculture, with the specific intention to preserve it and conserve it forever.
About 300 years ago prairies stretched from the Appalachians to the Rocky Mountains. Today less than 3 percent of these prairies survive. The rest have become farmland or developed land. Prairies are extremely diverse and home to many plant and animal species. They also contribute to clean water and healthy evironments.
Our prairie remains a work in progress, but we've witnessed some exciting results already. Some native plants have returned on their own. In some cases, we've had to re-introduce native plants to help re-establish their seed bank. Pollinators are thriving with all of the native flowers now available to them. Monarch butterfies are particularly abundant since there is so much milkweed growing.
